MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must have at least (A) six (6) years of full-time or, equivalent part-time, professional, administrative, supervisory, or managerial experience in a particular specialty (i.e. scientific, professional, or technical) and must possess current license and/or registration requirements established for the performance of the position, of which (B) at least two (2) years must have been in a project management, supervisory or managerial capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and substitutions below.

I. A certificate in a relevant or related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the required (A) experience.

II. A Bachelor’s degree in a related field may be substituted for two (2) years of the required (A) experience.

The Department of Public Utilities (DPU) is the state agency responsible for overseeing investor-owned electric power, natural gas, and water companies in Massachusetts. It regulates the safety of bus companies, moving companies, transportation network companies, and oversees the safety of natural gas pipelines and the MBTA.Â
The primary purpose of the position of Assistant General Counsel is to assist the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsels in managing all legal and policy matters affecting an agency of approximately 200 persons working in all Divisions of the Department\: Administration, Consumer Affairs, Electric Power, Legal, Natural Gas, Pipeline Safety, Rates and Revenue Requirements, Regional and Federal Affairs, Transportation Oversight, Rail Transit Safety, Transportation Network Company, and Siting.Â

The DPU will consider candidates who are not yet admitted in Massachusetts provided they are eligible for admission via the Massachusetts Bar process. Candidates must have already submitted their application for admission or be able to do so within two weeks of receiving an offer
Final employment offers will be contingent upon successful admission to the Massachusetts Bar within six months of their start date. Extensions to this timeframe can be reviewed on a case-by-case basis where delays are outside the candidate’s control.
