Job Summary

The McGowan Companies Legal Department is looking for a practical, business-minded attorney who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. The Deputy General Counsel reports to General Counsel and plays a critical role in advising on a broad range of legal matters that shape and support our fast-growing organization.

The ideal candidate will have experience with property and casualty insurance products and regulations. In this dynamic role, you will serve as a legal advisor to business units across the enterprise—supporting strategic objectives and providing counsel on matters that may include underwriting, product development, claims, bad faith, regulatory filings, rate and form submissions, reinsurance, distribution, and market conduct.

The scope of work will also extend beyond insurance to help the enterprise with matters that could include corporate policies, governance, tax, finance, employment law, litigation, contracts, and complex legal research. This is a unique opportunity to practice at the intersection of law and business, and to contribute meaningfully to a forward-looking, high-performing insurance enterprise.

We’re seeking someone who combines legal excellence with sound judgment, thrives in complexity and ambiguity, and serves as a trusted advisor in a collaborative team environment.

Responsibilities

As a key member of the legal team, you will:

  • Work under the direction of General Counsel while exercising independent legal judgment and providing proactive legal solutions.
  • Provide practical, strategic legal counsel across corporate, insurance, and regulatory matters including underwriting, claims, product development, M&A, compliance, and litigation.
  • Draft, review, revise, and negotiate Non-disclosure Agreements, Producer Agreements, Insurance related agreements, and vendor and service provider contracts including SaaS.
  • Research of insurance laws, regulations, and case law and provide detailed ‎guidance and analysis to partners and internal clients.
  • Draft memoranda on discrete legal issues.
  • Offer day-to-day legal guidance to internal business teams and senior leadership, balancing legal risk with operational goals.
  • Manage complex legal projects with cross-functional impact.
  • Engage with industry regulators and support compliance with insurance laws, data privacy (e.g., GDPR, state laws), and unfair claims practices acts.
  • Oversee internal legal operations which include workflows, technology adoption, and budget strategy.
  • Deliver legal and compliance advice and oversight to internal teams.
  • Develop and implement corporate policies that uphold ethics, legal compliance, and enterprise-wide integrity.
  • Support strategic corporate initiatives through legal insight and proactive risk management.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited U.S. law school.
  • Active license to practice law in the U.S. and in good standing.
  • 5 + years of relevant legal experience in corporate, insurance, or regulatory law.
  • Demonstrated experience with contract negotiation, insurance regulations, and claim litigation.
  • Strong understanding of insurance industry frameworks (e.g., Lloyd’s, PRA, FCA), U.S. state insurance laws, and data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
  • Exceptional legal writing, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to translate legal complexity into clear, actionable guidance for non-legal teams.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with internal and external stakeholders.
  • High integrity, strong judgment, and a proactive, solutions-focused mindset.
