Position Summary:

Asurion is seeking a strategic, experienced, and business-minded Vice President, Associate General Counsel, Technology to lead legal support for a broad portfolio of initiatives spanning emerging technologies including Artificial Intelligence (AI), product development, data and privacy, Intellectual Property (IP) and operational infrastructure for our suite of protection products. This leader will serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership across the company supporting and enabling transformative technology and product initiatives, product development, AI integration and Privacy and Risk.   

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in technology law, Product Development, AI, Privacy and intellectual property, be able to bridge the gap between legal principles and rapidly evolving technology to help the organization leverage technology, including AI, while advising on how to balance legal risks, engaging early in the process in design and development, as well as experience advising on operational and commercial issues in a fast-paced, innovative environment. 

Essential skills for this role include a strong legal background in privacy and data protection, experience in technology law, knowledge of relevant and emerging regulations, the ability to analyze complex technical and legal information, strong communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to collaborate with senior leadership and  have a proactive and solutions-oriented approach to navigating a fast-paced work environment in a rapidly evolving area of law.

This role will lead a team of in-house counsel, along with potentially coordinating with outside counsel as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Data privacy compliance: Develop and implement legal strategies for privacy, data governance, collection, use and storage of data including agreement, and vendor contracts related to AI across all operations and program areas.

AI Regulation and Governance: Advise on complex legal and ethical considerations of AI initiatives, including the implementation and use of AI across business and functional teams on regulatory compliance, privacy and cybersecurity, and intellectual property concerns

  • Risk Assessment and Mitigation: Identifying, assessing, and mitigating legal risks associated with client contracts, product development, including AI and privacy, including issues of algorithmic bias, data breaches, and ensuring ethical considerations are addressed throughout the AI lifecycle. Advise on global privacy and data protection laws, including CCPA, GDPR, and overseeing implementation of internal and consumer products when they affect company business
  • Contract Negotiation and Drafting: Drafting and negotiating agreements related to Privacy, AI and data usage, including data sharing agreements, licensing agreements, and vendor contracts.
  • Developing policies and best practices: Developing and updating internal policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure compliance with AI and data privacy regulations.
  • Incident Response: Assisting with incident response, particularly those related to AI and/or personal data breaches, including evaluating incidents and drafting/reviewing notifications to regulators and individuals
  • Training and Education: Developing and delivering training programs for employees on AI and privacy laws and compliance requirements.
  • Collaboration: Working closely with various teams, including product development, engineering, IT, compliance, and other legal specialists (like Intellectual Property and cybersecurity lawyers).
  • Staying Current: Continuously monitoring and analyzing trends in AI and data privacy law and technology to ensure advice remains current and strategic. 
  • Developing policies and best practices: evolving AI best practices into product development and business practice
  • IP Oversight: Oversee protection and enforcement strategies for Asurion’s IP portfolio. Counsel on third-party IP use, licensing, clearance, and risk assessments. Partner with engineering and marketing to ensure defensible and strategic IP positioning.
  • Product Development (Direct-to-Consumer, Mobile & Web Apps, Pilots): Provide legal counsel on end-to-end product lifecycles—from ideation through launch—including oversight of product terms. Support product teams on customer-facing platforms (mobile apps, website apps, new services) and pilot projects.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school; member in good standing with the Tennessee Bar (or ability to waive in).
  • 15+ years of legal experience, with significant in-house experience advising on AI, technology, privacy, and operational legal matters.
  • Deep subject matter expertise in AI/ML governance, privacy laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA/CPRA), cybersecurity, IP law, and product counseling.
  • Experience advising on enterprise-wide initiatives involving emerging technology, data strategy, and third-party vendors.
  • Strong leadership and management capabilities; experience overseeing internal teams and coordinating with external counsel.
  • Proven ability to influence senior stakeholders, think strategically, and offer practical business-aligned legal advice.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in retail, consumer technology, or telecommunications industries.
  • Familiarity with agile product development, SaaS contracts, and multi-jurisdictional compliance.
  • Demonstrated leadership in legal risk management in emerging areas (e.g., generative AI, data ethics, automated decision-making).
